Potholes are a sign of fatigued asphalt that has lost its ability to maintain its flexibility and strength. They are unsightly, and they pose the risk of causing damage to the vehicles and pedestrians entering your property. If you ignore potholes, you risk further damage to your pavement every day it rains or another car drives over the damaged area. Pot Hole repair in Atlanta is a necessity!
Some potholes can be prevented. Asphalt pavement that is sealcoated, has good drainage and has cracks filled when they occur is less likely to be plagued with potholes. However, if, despite your best efforts, you have potholes in your pavement, there are several options for repairing them.
• Good — If you need an immediate — but temporary — repair, your contractor can use cold-mix asphalt to repair the pothole. One method — “throw and roll” — involves compacting the repaired area, while the other — “throw and go” — requires traffic driving over the repaired area to make the compression. If you are planning to repave your parking lot or driveway soon, or if you just need to guard against additional damages until weather or the contractor’s schedule permits another repair method to be used, this method may be acceptable. These two methods are typically the least expensive options.
• Better — Using hot-mix asphalt, your contractor can “bandage” the wound with what is called a skin patch. These repairs last much longer than the options using cold-mix asphalt, but they are not permanent.
• Best — Two methods are considered to be permanent repairs that will last as long as the surrounding pavement. If appearance or “going green” are important to you, you might consider an option that uses infrared heaters to soften an area around the pothole. New hot-mix asphalt is added and worked into the softened asphalt, giving the repair a seamless appearance without noticeable edges. The second type of permanent repair is “remove and replace.” Your contractor will saw out the damaged area and replace it with new asphalt. This is the only method suitable for situations requiring repairs to the base as it is the only method that exposes the foundation sufficiently.
