Pavement Markings

Pavement Marking Contractor in Atlanta, GA

Ancient civilizations began building roads and other pavements more than 6,000 years ago to serve a variety of purposes. Today, Americans are accustomed to seeing pavement markings in parking lots as well as on highways, city streets, and interstates. You might not realize it, but people have only been marking pavements for a couple of centuries, and the system is constantly evolving and growing.

What Are Pavement Markings?

Basically, any line, image, or word painted on a pavement at the request of a property owner, municipality, property manager, or government agency can be considered a marking. Centerlines, traffic arrows, lane dividers, and edge lines are all examples of pavement markings. Crosswalks, stop bars, verbal warnings, handicapped symbols, and interstate identification shields are also pavement markings. The lines dividing parking lots into separate parking spaces, painted or stenciled curbs, chevrons on speed bumps, and symbols denoting railroad crossings, HOV lanes, bicycle lanes, or school zones can also be classified as pavement markings.

What Pavement Markings Should I Have in My Parking Lot?

Pavement markings can be optional, or they can be required by federal law, municipal building codes, or local fire ordinances. The following list provides information on some of the most common optional and mandatory pavement markings for parking lots.

  1. ADA Markings: The ADA is a federal law that covers many topics, including parking lots. You are required to provide accessible parking spaces, and each space must include a pavement marking that features an image of a person occupying a wheelchair. Each handicapped parking space must be bordered by an access aisle, and the ADA requires access aisles to be marked so that other drivers will not park there. Other ADA markings may be optional. For example, the ADA does not require that you mark the accessible route from the parking space to your entrance, but many property managers do so to make the route easier to identify.

  1. Line Striping: Marking the borders of individual parking spaces will provide drivers with information on where and how to park their vehicles.
  2. Crosswalks: Crosswalks show pedestrians the safest point to cross a travel aisle, but they also warn drivers to exercise additional caution in the area.
  3. Stop Bars: Wide horizontal lines near stop signs tell drivers where to stop so that they do not encroach on crosswalks or travel lanes.
  4. Traffic Arrows: Traffic arrows tell drivers whether a travel aisle is for one-way or two-way traffic. At exits, traffic arrows instruct drivers on whether they must turn left, may continue straight, or must turn right. With or without verbiage, traffic arrows can direct drivers to specific buildings or entrances, or they can help them locate your lot’s exit.
  5. Diagonal Lines: Depending on local ordinances and paint color, diagonal lines can convey different messages. For example, red diagonal lines typically mean that no parking is allowed within their boundaries, while yellow diagonal lines at the end of parking aisles usually mean that drivers should not park there because there is either insufficient room or limited visibility.
  6. Curbs: Red curbs can designate a fire lane or other area in which parking is prohibited. Other paint colors can be used in conjunction with signs or stencils to indicate that only certain people are allowed to park there.
