If you have ever overheard contractors make comments such as, “Today is not a good day for sealcoating” or discussing the sealcoating season, you may have wondered how they determine the right time for asphalt sealcoating. Although you might have heard a contractor comment that a specific day was perfect for sealcoating, perfect days are few and far between. Perfect conditions are defined by the sealant manufacturer and represent the ideal weather conditions. Fortunately, sealcoating does not have to be applied under perfect conditions. Since it is best for conditions to be as close to perfect as possible, however, there are certain times of the year that are preferable.
Perfect Time for Sealcoating In Atlanta – What Are Ideal Conditions?
Under ideal conditions, the relative humidity would be no more than 50 percent and the temperature would be 70 degrees or less. The lowest temperature during the application process and the 24 hours immediately following would not fall below 50 degrees. A gentle breeze would be blowing until the sealant has dried. The day would be sunny rather than overcast, and the weather forecast would not predict any rainfall for at least 24 hours after the application of the sealant.
Which Times of the Year Are Best?
Since ideal conditions are rare, sealcoating professionals have to settle for the times that best match perfect weather. The seasons or months that are best for sealcoating vary by geographic location. In the Atlanta area, the best months for sealcoating are usually April and May.
Although weather is not always consistent, historical records show that temperatures during April, May and October are most suitable for sealcoating. During all three months, the average lows are above 50 degrees and the average highs are less than 80 degrees. However, April and May tend to have lower humidity levels than October, giving them the edge. In addition, April is normally the driest month of the year, reducing the chance that an unexpected shower could ruin the sealcoating job before it has had time to cure and increasing the chance that the day will be sunny.
Sealcoating During Other Months
Asphalt sealing can be applied whenever the weather conditions permit. Therefore, there may be plentiful opportunities for sealcoating during March or November. There may even be a day or two during the winter months on which sealcoating could be applied, but it should not be expected.
This leaves the months of June, July, August and September. Contractors typically apply more sealcoating during these four months than the other eight months combined. However, the humidity levels and rainfall totals are normally higher during these months than in April and May. The chances of triple-digit temperatures are also greater; extremely hot weather can cause the sealant to dry too fast on the top, which can potentially be a problem.
