The Americans with Disabilities Act is such a comprehensive piece of legislation that even a brief summary of the entire ADA would require many pages. Fortunately, most of the guidelines that pertain to parking lots are contained in single — albeit lengthy — section. Here are the basic facts you need to know about parking lot striping and ADA to make sure that your lot is in compliance.
• The handicapped spaces required depend on the total parking offered by your lot. For lots with no more than 25 total spaces, you are required to supply only one handicapped space. With 26 to 50 spaces, you must offer two or more handicapped spaces. If your lot has 301 or more spaces, you must provide seven or more handicapped spaces for the first 300 spaces plus an additional handicapped space for every 8 parking spaces over 300.
• Handicapped spaces must be no less than 8 feet wide and flanked by access aisles that do not encroach on the actual parking space. The aisles for handicapped spaces for cars cannot be less than 5 feet wide, while the aisles for vans cannot be less than 8 feet wide.
• The international emblem for handicapped accessibility is to be used on pavement markings and the mandatory signs at the front of each space. This emblem is a blue field with a white stylized representation of a wheelchair. Signs have to be affixed in a permanent manner, such as on a secure post or attached to a wall.
• The handicapped space that is the shortest distance from your building’s entrance must accommodate vans, and the fixed sign at the front of the space must state this fact. All handicapped spaces are to provide access via the most direct connection and cannot require passage behind any parked vehicles. Crosswalks must be identified if the path requires crossing a lane of traffic.
