Asphalt sealants have a high water content, page and it is the evaporation of the water that allows the sealant to dry and cure. Just like paint, site if more than one coat is required, illness it is best to apply sealer in thin, uniform coats. If the application is too thick, the moisture can be trapped, which can result in tracking. The finish will not be as attractive, either, since the results may be less uniform.
How Many Coats Are Needed When Sealcoating?
Therefore, the physical properties of asphalt sealants require multiple coats, rather than one thick coat, if the job demands the additional protection. The number of coats depends primarily on the amount of traffic the treated area must endure. In a low-traffic area, such as a residential driveway, a single coat is usually sufficient, but if the asphalt is extremely porous, two coats may be needed. Parking lots with moderate to heavy traffic typically need two full coats with a third coat applied to the highest traffic areas, such as entrances, turn lanes and exits. It is extremely rare for a surface to need three complete coats.
If multiple coats are to be applied, the area needs to be kept free of traffic throughout the process. Each coat must have time to dry before the next coat is applied. The area must be kept free of debris as well, and it may be necessary to remove trash or dirt between coats. Once the final coat has been applied, the area should remain closed to traffic until the sealant has had time to cure sufficiently.
