Do You Trust Your Asphalt Contractor?

Every construction specialty has its share of unscrupulous contractors, and the asphalt industry is no exception. There are roofers who will knock on doors to offer free roofing inspections, and if the homeowner lets them on the roof, the inspector will then make sure that there is damage even if he has to inflict it himself. There are asphalt contractors who claim to have material left over from a job in the neighborhood that they can use on the homeowner’s driveway, allegedly saving the homeowner a substantial amount of money. With so many scam artists making the rounds these days, how can you tell whether you can trust the contractor you are considering?

Do You Trust Your Asphalt Contractor?  Can You Verify Your Contractor’s Information?

Any asphalt contractor you are considering should be able to provide you with a physical address, a permanent phone number and proof of insurance coverage. With few exceptions, he will have a website that you can visit to search for comments from former customers. He should be able to give you the names, phone numbers and addresses of previous customers who can serve as references.

Does Your Asphalt Contractor Seem Evasive?

Evasiveness can manifest as an unwillingness to return your calls or address your concerns. A reputable paving contractor will not mind explaining every aspect of the work to be done, including the materials to be used, the equipment that will be needed, the way that traffic control will be handled and the time required for the project. If he does not know the answer to a question, he will find out instead of spouting some confusing, irrelevant explanation.

Is the Contractor’s Quote Detailed?

Scribbling a price on the back of an envelope may technically be a written quote, but without the details of the work, the company’s information and the payment terms, such a quote would never stand up in court. A reputable asphalt company will ensure that the quote and the contract you sign contain detailed information, including the scope of the job, the materials, the hours required and the expected start date.

Is the Contractor’s Experience Relevant?

Knowing the contractor’s years of industry experience is important, but it is equally important to know how many years of experience he has in the type of project you need. For example, if you need to have a four-lane highway built, you need a contractor who has done more than just apply hundreds of miles of centerlines. It is also important to know whether his crew has the experience needed to deliver quality work on your project.

Have You Researched the Contractor’s Reputation?

There is a theory that a happy customer will tell two or three people, but an unhappy customer will tell dozens. Search online to see what you can discover about the contractor. Many sites ask customers to review or rate companies or contractors with whom they have dealt. People also tend to post on the social media sites if they have a bad experience with a company. Remember to search for the contractor’s name as well the company; the name of the company could have changed.
