It seems that the environment is on everyone’s mind these days. In recent decades, people have begun to recognize that natural resources are not unlimited and must therefore be used wisely. The trend today is to look for sustainability and recyclability in products. Because asphalt pavement can be fully recycled, it is already considered environmentally green. However, the asphalt industry has made a very eco-friendly product even better by developing an alternative to traditional asphalt pavement called permeable asphalt.
Environmentally Green Paving – A Quick Overview
Permeable asphalt is designed to contain small spaces in the pavement that allow water to trickle through it. These spaces are sometimes referred to as pores or voids, but essentially, they are just tiny holes in the pavement. Water drains through these holes into a drainage system beneath the surface of the pavement. Other drainage components can typically be eliminated, including storm drains and curbs.
Environmental Benefits of Permeable Asphalt Pavement
All asphalt pavements are environmentally safe. Asphalt does not leach toxic chemicals into the ground or into water. In fact, asphalt is so safe that it is often used to line reservoirs containing public water supplies. However, vehicles traveling over or parking on the pavement have a tendency to leak gas, oil or other automotive fluids. With traditional asphalt pavement, runoff can carry these chemicals into drains that eventually lead to rivers, lakes or streams. With permeable asphalt pavement, any chemicals that are washed away by the runoff remain isolated beneath the pavement. Furthermore, the water collected under the pavement will be released into the soil, replenishing the water table or nourishing nearby landscaping.
What Are the Negatives?
The main problem with the current generation of permeable asphalt pavements is that they do not hold up well under heavy weights or high volumes. Manufacturers are researching ways to produce permeable pavement that can be used on airport runways or busy interstates, but for now, these types of applications are not recommended. However, permeable asphalt pavement can make a highly desirable surface for parking lots that allow only cars or light trucks, tennis courts, pedestrian areas or residential driveways.
Permeable asphalt needs to be professionally cleaned every six months or so. If the holes become clogged, water will be unable to penetrate beneath the surface. Asphalt professionals either power wash or vacuum the pavement to keep the holes clear.
Installing permeable asphalt pavement will be slightly more expensive than paving the same area with traditional asphalt mix. However, the reduction or elimination of surface drains, gutters, catch basins and curbs can help offset the difference in price.
