Like virtually every other construction material, asphalt pavement has benefitted from decades of research to develop improvements in the mix as well as the installation. This research has led to multiple types of asphalt pavement that can offer different benefits. The three most common types of asphalt pavement are described below, but each type can have sub-categories as well.
Pavement – Different Types
Hot Mix Asphalt
Hot mix is the traditional type of asphalt pavement that is perfect for most uses. It is durable, economical and attractive. Sub-categories include:
• Reclaimed or recycled asphalt pavement, which is “used” asphalt that is processed to make “new” asphalt. Asphalt pavement is 100-percent recyclable, and although most is recycled at the processing plant, smaller amounts can be recycled at the site.
• Fine-graded mixes are hot mix asphalt that has aggregates that do not exceed a specific size, typically the approximate size of a grain of sand.
• Coarse-graded mixes are hot mix asphalt that contains aggregates that are slightly larger in size than fine-graded mixes. Under certain conditions, coarse-graded mixes may provide greater resistance to rutting than fine-graded mixes.
Porous Asphalt
Whereas hot mix asphalt prevents water infiltration, porous asphalt does the opposite. It allows water to filter through so that it can be redirected into the soil rather than channeled to a sewer.
• When used as the top or friction course, porous asphalt helps prevent puddles from collecting on the surface. Cars do not produce as much spray from their tires, and evaporation can occur more quickly.
• An asphalt treated permeable base, or ATPB, can be installed as a drainage layer. ATPB can be used with porous asphalt or non-permeable pavements, such as HMA or stone mastic.
Stone Mastic
In Europe, stone mastic pavement has been used for years to protect against studded tires and rutting. However, this type of pavement is a relative newcomer to the United States. It features a stone matrix that makes it extremely durable, and most stone mastic pavement in the U.S. is used on federal highway projects, such as high-volume interstates.
