Paving in the Rain?

Whenever reputable paving contractors begin a new project, try they follow a standard checklist. When it comes to weather, link most companies will be looking for sunny skies. Rain events will generally cause compaction problems with the asphalt that is about to be laid. While most projects can usually proceed with very light sprinkles, approved moderate to heavy rain will usually postpone the work for a day. Torrential downpours, in fact, can ruin the pavement by preventing it from setting correctly. This will usually lead to a surface that is simply not viable for most traffic loads.

Paving in the Rain? – Why Rain Must Be Avoided

Asphalt is best installed without any outside moisture. Significant rain, in fact, can cause the asphalt lifts to avoid bonding properly. Without the correct degree of adherence, the pavement will likely not reach the proper compaction. In fact, if asphalt is laid while puddles are on the ground, the water may turn to steam. The binder may even separate from the aggregate. In some cases, a significant portion of the project will have to be done again. Overly cool temperatures can even lead to evaporative cooling, which will affect the density of the finished pavement.

Shutting Down a Project Site Quickly and Efficiently

Whenever rain is expected within the next few hours, the job site will need to be shut down as soon as possible. All of the heavy trucks that are currently on site should be covered with tarps so that expensive machinery is protected from harm. Some contractors might also wish to set up vertical-faced construction joints for some added protection. Workers should also avoid tracking dirt and mud into the area. When the asphalt is eventually laid, a firm and unyielding base will be an absolute requirement.

Extending the Life of the Asphalt

There are a number of excellent reasons for covering up when the rain arrives. When installed properly, pavement should last from 10 to 15 years. Quality contractors will not cut corners and will always ensure that each project segment receives the proper amount of attention.
