Should there be Scuffs on the Pavement After Sealcoating?

Recently completed sealcoating jobs may be prone to scuffing in the immediate aftermath. Most of this scuffing is superficial and will begin to fade within a few weeks. Once the sealcoat has time to stiffen, no rx the scuffing will become a thing of the past. In fact, sealcoat layers can take up to three months to fully cure. In the interim period, drivers should generally exercise a bit of caution. By avoiding tight turns, the pavement can be kept in top-notch shape. The scuffs that do occur are likely due to sand grains being displaced from the aggregate. These will wash away during the next good rain.

Pavement Age and Weather Conditions

A number of different factors can affect scuffing. Because the sealcoat is generally softer, scuffing is more likely to occur on these surfaces. Likewise, hot weather will tend to encourage scuffs in the weeks after the sealcoating job has been completed. Most sealcoating jobs, in fact, should show a certain degree of scuffing. This indicates that the material has been manufactured properly and is appropriately flexible. Sealcoating jobs that are completed in the spring will be immediately exposed to the hot summer weather and will thus be more likely to scuff. These marks will become minimized within a few months.

Tires and Vehicles

Vehicle type and tire type might also play a role. Larger vehicles with powerful treads are more likely to dig into the sealcoat, especially when the steering wheel is turned sharply to the right or left. Industrial trucks and SUVs, in fact, are more likely to have a significant impact than smaller cars. Trucks with longer wheel bases might also cause problems. In general, the new sealcoat must go through one complete cycle of hot and cold weather before the scuffing will entirely disappear. Keeping the parking lot closed to traffic for a few extra days will also help quite a bit going forward.
